Phaseolus vulgaris, also known as Cherokee Black Bean, is an heirloom pole bean that produces 6" greenish-purple pods full of shiny black beans. The Cherokee ancestors of late Dr. John Wyche carried this bean over a long death march in the winter of 1838 from the Smokey Mountains to Oklahoma, leaving a trail of 4,000 graves called the Trail of Tears. Sow seeds 1" deep and 2"apart outdoors in a sunny location after all danger of frost has passed. Provide fencing or trellis for support. Harvest snap beans frequently to increase yields, leaving some beans to mature for use as dry beans.
