Berberis thunbergii, commonly known as Japanese Barberry, is a spiny deciduous shrub with rounded, ovate leaves that intensify during fall. 'Golden Ruby' is a compact variety with a dense rounded shape of coral-orange foliage that fades brick red with gold margins in fall. Rarely produces seed. Plant in average, well-draining soil in a sunny location. Barberry will tolerate drought, but do not fair well in soggy or wet soil.
