Brassica oleracea, commonly called Long Island Improved Brussels Sprouts, is a compact plant with sturdy stalks that produce 50-100 dark-green Brussels over a long season. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, transplant outdoors once the ground has warmed. Brussels sprouts are a slow-growing vegetable that need an even supply of water. After a light frost, sprouts will take on a sweeter flavor.
